About Beacon KVM

Beacon KVM is an IP KVM with remote access built in. It is made by a network company in Shenzhen that was shipping enterprise networking hardware and software before this product existed.

The company

Beacon KVM is built by Biyang Cloud (Shenzhen) Network Technology Co., Ltd., in Shenzhen, China.

Our existing business is SD-WAN: software and routers sold to enterprise customers in China. Beacon KVM is our first product for customers outside that market, which is why you have probably not heard of us. This page is here so that you do not have to take the rest of the site on faith.

Why this product exists

What we are building for is remote presence — being needed somewhere you are not.

A machine stops booting at two in the morning. The fix takes thirty seconds once somebody can see the screen and press a key. Without that, it takes a drive, or a colleague who is not on call, or a data centre ticket and a four-hour wait. Beacon KVM is the somebody who can see the screen.

Remote desktop software cannot cover this case, and not because it is badly made. It is a program running on the machine you are trying to reach. When that machine is in its BIOS, halfway through a failed update, or switched off, the program is not running either. An IP KVM sits underneath all of that, plugged in the way a monitor and a keyboard are.

The hardware is not a prototype

The board inside a Beacon KVM is the SD-WAN CPE we already build and ship. That is why it has four Ethernet ports where most IP KVMs have one, and why H.264 encoding runs on the board's own video processor instead of costing you thirty times the bandwidth.

Each unit is assembled, flashed and checked before it leaves us. Made in China, and marked as such on the label underneath.

How we work

We publish the comparison we lose. Our side-by-side against JetKVM, PiKVM and TinyPilot includes the rows where we are behind — JetKVM is a third of the price, and PiKVM has ATX power control today while we do not. You should read the table rather than our adjectives.

The software is free on hardware you may already own. It runs on a Raspberry Pi 4B with a USB capture dongle, and that build is on GitHub. The picture is worse and it caps at 30 fps, but everything else is the same software. You can decide whether you like it before spending anything.
